Valley Club Poker nights
Valley Club is partnered with 10 bars for 12 games a week in McAllen, Mission
and Laredo, and Ron Rodriguez is working on expanding his business to the
Mid-Valley and Brownsville.
As long as the televised poker games keep piquing people’s interest, he will
likely find plenty of players to fill his tables wherever he goes in the Valley.
Even though they’re not gambling for money, players new and old flock to the
games because they want to hone their skills and pal around with people who have
a common interest. Most harbor the longshot desire to be on the World Series of
Poker. Some come for stress relief.

Imagine seeing a sight that
was enjoyed nearly one hundred years ago. IMAS is proud to
present, on loan from the private collection of Dr. Lawrence
Gelman, a compilation of stained glass windows originating from
St. Paul's Church in Albany, New York and dating back 1914. This
wonderful exhibition of religious iconography will also feature
windows produced by the famed glass company, Tiffany Studios.
IMAS invites the public to immerse itself in viewing the
splendor of an art form that has graced the walls of churches,
cathedrals, and other religious architecture of the world. The
gallery is designed and finely crafted to replicate the backdrop
for such an ethereal event.

The Brownsville Heritage
Complex in historic downtown Brownsville invites the public to
view the exhibit Ladrillos Y Mezcla (Bricks & Mortar): The
History of Brick and its Contribution to the Architecture of the
Lower Rio Grande Corridor.
The exhibit will be on display in the Aiken Education Center
inside the Brownsville Heritage Museum from April 26 to June 8,
2007 during regular museum hours. Cost to view the exhibit is
included in the price of admission.
Inspired by the research and presentation of the history of
brick in the Rio Grande Valley by local businessman, artist,
historian and architect Manuel Hinojosa, this exhibit explores
the history of bricks and architecture of the lower Rio Grande
Valley corridor through historic photographs, artifacts, and
drawings.
Ladrillos Y Mezcla (Bricks & Mortar): The History of Brick and
its Contribution to the Architecture of the Lower Rio Grande
Corridor , produced by the Museums of Port Isabel (MoPI), was
first displayed at the Treasures of the Gulf Museum in Port
Isabel last fall and will travel to other venues thereafter.
The origin of brick making in the lower Rio Grande River
borderlands evolved from the Mesoamerican and Spanish Colonial
elements of centuries of adobe brick making. Shortages of rock
building materials that were abundant in the early colonization
of Nuevo Santander were a major factor in the introduction of a
clay-fired brick to the newly formed town site of Matamoros,
Mexico.
As a result of the shortage, an eclectic architecture was
created when local brick masons incorporated Spanish, New
Orleans and later classical elements into building details on
both sides of the Rio Grande River.
The handmade brick industry continued to manifest during the
1900s, when the new economy was fueled by the creation of new
cities by the Anglo-American migrations to the Rio Grande
Valley.
